Shield of dreams

Ciaran Caldwell has fond recollections of County Antrim Shield success with Cliftonville and believes tonight’s First Round clash with Knockbreda can help ignite the campaign – but has warned against any under-estimation of the east Belfast side.

“The season hasn’t gone in any way to plan,” admits the midfielder, who won the competition with the Reds back in 2011.

“Obviously you’ve got to start winning any game, even if it is a County Antrim Shield game against Knockbreda. We will give Knockbreda the respect they are due – they’ve made a great start to the season and are sitting top of the Championship.

“To win the County Antrim Shield would be a big boost of confidence to everyone. It was the first thing I won and I always have good memories of playing in it.”

You can read the full Caldwell interview in this evening’s edition of our Matchday Magazine, which will be on sale at Solitude for the usual price of just £2.

Alongside boss Barry Gray’s pre-game views, The Red Eye’s fifth issue of the campaign reflects on our recent Matchday Lunch, provides supporters with the latest addition to their 2017/18 poster collection and takes our traditional steps down memory lane – plus plenty more besides.

Our Matchday Magazine has attained a top-three position in the NI Football Programme Collectors’ annual awards poll for the last six seasons so, if you’re not a regular reader, why not take a look at what you’ve been missing out?
